One of the corporations behind the remarkable relaxation of labour restrictions in Karnataka, India was Apple and its manufacturing ally Foxconn.
According to Financial Times, this has led to some alterations in the regulations where women are allowed to work 12-hour day and night shifts, similar to a few companies’ practices in China.
Following the unfortunate effects on the supply chain due to the Covid-19 pandemic, this new policy is said to be one of India’s most liberal employment agreements.
As per Foxconn, this modification is crucial in establishing a scalable and efficient manufacturing process, and the capability of running two 12-hour production shifts will prove to be a significant step towards accomplishing their goals.
This decision is a result of the state government’s efforts in grabbing the opportunity to decrease its dependency on Chinese production.
The state modified its enforcement of the factories act, permitting up to 12-hour shifts from 9-hour shifts, and allowing women to work at night.
